Tracking Tasks
Writing by Chris on Tuesday, 7 of August , 2007 at 11:51 am
I’m
trying to keep a tighter watch on my tasks, and being that the ticket system at my job… doesn’t work as
well as I would like (sucks), I am using a few other apps. I’m a fan of Outlook tasks,
but as a guy who likes using web based tools for flexibility,
RememberTheMilk.com seems like a good choice.

Here is a good quick launch tip for
Outlook Tasks.

So
now I can hit
<shift><ctrl><t>
and
have a new Outlook Task window open and ready, even if Outlook itself is
closed.
For
anyone that didn’t know, you can also drag and drop an email in Outlook over to
the tasks, to create a new task.

Remember The Milk is a nice web
based task lists, with lots of options for updating it, and for receiving
reminders. You can update through a scaled down mobile web interface, email,
sms (Twitter), IM (IMified), from a command line-esque interface (Launchy),
Offline (Google Gears), or through lots of other 3rd party apps. RTM
supports reminders by email, IM, and SMS, as well as RSS feeds and iCal
support.

You
can also be boring and just open a web browser and go to the website.
Bah!
Here is a good article for extending
Launchy (great application launcher/indexer) to use Twitter and RTM. This
allows you to quickly manage tasks without having to touch the GUI. The scripts
use curl, so it would work just as well on Linux or Mac (on Mac you can also use
Quicksilver).

So
I can hit
<alt>
<spacebar>rtm<tab>tail logfiles on xform at 9am
tomorrow<enter>
and
I now have a new RTM task setup with a due date tomorrow at 9AM.
<alt><spacebar>rtm<tab>!complete tail
logfiles on xform<enter>
Would mark the task as
complete.
Command Examples (works for SMS as
well):

There is also a nice script for
adding SMS reminders to Twitter using Timer in the same
tutorial:

So
I can hit
<alt><spacebar>
timer<tab>Call VMWare in
60<enter>
and I will get an SMS in 60 minutes
telling me to call VMWare.
