Becoming Adolf: Entertainment & Culture: vanityfair.com

Writing by Chris on Thursday, 11 of October , 2007 at 9:11 am

I knew it!

Becoming Adolf: Entertainment & Culture: vanityfair.com

I decided to grow a Toothbrush mustache. Well, that’s not what I called it. Until I started this story, I had only one name for the thing in mind: a Hitler mustache. An inch of hair that speaks of bottomless evil. A few nights earlier, I had seen Richard Dawkins, the author of The God Delusion, interviewed by Bill O’Reilly, who, citing Stalin and Hitler, said he thought atheists, because of their lack of restraining faith, were more susceptible to evil. To which Dawkins (in essence) replied: both Stalin and Hitler wore mustaches—do we therefore think the mustache was the cause of their behavior? I experienced this as an epiphany: By Jove! I said to myself. It was the mustache!

Ignis Solus

Very nice.

Lit Fuse Films - Movies - Ignis Solus

Ignis Solus is latin, and roughly translates to “burn alone”. It is a bit of an experiment in improvised machinima, and as far as we can tell, also constitutes the first piece of Team Fortress Two machinima not created by Valve.

This has to be a joke.

Diana jury coach crashes in Paris… as it tries to outmanoeuvre the paparazzi | the Mail on Sunday

But within minutes of starting the tour in the Place Vendome, close to the Ritz hotel, their bus knocked a police outrider from his motorcycle.

Then seconds later the bus collided with an 18-inch metal bollard.

OK, you’re right, it IS a bubble

Entrepreneurs? Smoking dope. What are they thinking? Why aren’t they all working for Apple, helping to build a fatter Nano? What’s wrong with them? Potsmoking, mussed-hair, rooftop party-going, trendy glasses-wearing, sandal-clad, Red Bull-snorting, laid-getting wankers, the lot of ‘em. The sooner they realize the world never changes and there are no new opportunities to pursue, the better.

The Real Charles Schulz

Writing by Chris on Sunday, 7 of October , 2007 at 9:11 pm

Who knew?

Books Q&A: The Real Charles Schulz - Newsweek Entertainment - MSNBC.com

But the bitterness and competitiveness are striking. Early on, when one of his fellow art school instructors—Charlie Brown, as it happens—told Schulz that he himself was giving up his cartoon ambitions, Schulz replied, “Good. That will make one less cartoonist I have to compete with.” Even later, when Peanuts reached $1 billion a year in 1989 and he was making tens of millions of dollars every year in the 1990s, he felt so competitive toward another cartoonist that he threatened to draw a Peanuts strip so that “everybody will worry about Snoopy, and nobody’s going to read your stupid story, and I’ll get more publicity than you will! So there!”

I wished for him that, in his 60s and 70, he would come to grips with some of this, the competitiveness and bitterness, his use of misery as a strategy. I asked friends, did Sparky ever grow up, did he become the man he could be and fulfill himself in an Aristotelian sense. I felt Charles Schulz never transcended himself as the boy Minnesota and the barber’s son.

Review: Finishing the Game

Writing by Chris on Sunday, 7 of October , 2007 at 7:46 pm

I’d watch that.
Review: Finishing the Game - Cinematical

The movie is based on a real-life event: When Bruce Lee died in 1973, he left a significant amount of footage for the film Game of Death — enough footage that producers wanted to complete the film and promote it heavily as Lee’s last movie. But they needed a stand-in who resembled Lee, to finish production on Game of Death. Finishing the Game is an imagining of how the search for Lee’s replacement might have gone, filmed in documentary format.

This is not what I was expecting. It looks too serious to me. I’ll still watch it, but I have to imagine its going to bomb.
